Safeguard the co-op
I
AM writing on behalf of 'The Section', a local band which has been
playing in this area for many years. Like
a lot of other bands, we frequently use the Musicians' Co-op to
practice. It is obvious that the co-op is used by many local musicians,
young and not so young, by working bands, by those who want to start a
band, by those who have their own equipment and by those who hire
equipment. We
are alarmed at the possibility that the city council may he selling the
land where the co-op is situated to Chelverton UK for re-development. While
this transaction in itself might be worthy or well-intentioned,
experience suggests that a non-profit-making local organisation like the
Musicians' Co-op would not survive. Retail outlets make money for
developers - Musicians' Co-ops don't. If
this land is sold, we would expect the city council to ensure the
survival of the Musicians' Co-op as part of any deal. Anything less
would be indicative of a cynical indifference to a valuable,
long-standing local initiative which the area should he proud of. I
hope all local musicians and anyone who enjoys the rich variety of
musical talent in this area will remain vigilant over this issue and
make sure that their councillors are aware of their views if this sale
does go ahead. After all, the city council calls on local musicians to
help to ensure the continued success of the events such as the recent
Light and Water Festival. Dave Beesley (on behalf of the Section R & B band) Woodhill Avenue, Morecambe |
