Lancaster Guardian 23/8/02

Think again

I WAS appalled to read in last week's Lancaster Guardian that the council is considering bulldozing the Musicians' Co-op to make way, no doubt, for another theme pub or more luxury flats.

Leaving aside the issue of whether it is right to make a quick buck by selling off council property rather than having a regular long-term income by leasing it, the Musicians' Co-op is a superb, non-profit making organisation.

For hundreds of local musicians it is really the only place for them to rehearse and record material and has been on the site, paying rent into council coffers, for 17 years.

I urge Lancaster's councillors, particularly after the shameful episode of the Navigation pub, not to disgrace themselves further by selling off an other of the town's unique assets to the interests of big business.
